Diagnostic Value of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology in Cold Nodules of Thyroid

Abstract
|
|
|
Results of the preoperative fine needle aspiration cytology on 50 patients with palpable cold nodules of the thyroid were assessed with postoperative histopathologic diagnosis.
The patients were collected during the period from January 1982 to October 1983 at the
Department of Surgery, Kyung Hee University, College of Medicine. The results obtained were follows;
1) Diagnostic cells were aspirated from thyroid nodules in 46 of 50 patients (cell obtainability, 92%)
2) Diagnostic accuracy of FNA on 50 patients with thyroid cold nodules was 84. 0% with false positive rate of 9.1% and with false negative rate of 7.6%.
3) Thyroid carcinoma was found in 12 of 39 patients with single cold nodule (30.8%), and
thyroid carcinoma in one of 11 with multiple cold nodules (9. 1%).
Overall incidence of cancinoma in 50 patients with cold nodules was 26%.
4) Twelve cases of cyctic lesions turned out histologically to be nodular hyperplasia or adenoma in 11 cases and carcinoma in one cases false positive rate of the cystic lesions was 9.1%.
5) No complication on the procedure of fine needle aspiration of the thyroid nodules was noted.
